Part I – Transcription and Translation

Overview - how genes work

    Genes produce proteins that regulate chemical reactions inside the cell

    2 step process

        1)Transcription in the nucleus

            make messenger mRNA from DNA templates using base-pairing rules

        2)Translation in the cytoplasm – production of the protein

            Make protein with mRNA and transfer RNA


Materials: Excel, computer

Exercise: Simulation of Transcription and Translation in Excel
