Materials: Microscope, various slides...

Lower Invertebrates Lab BI 101

Lower Invertebrates Porifera – Sponges Cnidaria      Corals, Hydroids, Jellyfish Platyhelminthes      Various representatives of the flatworms Annelida      Various representatives of the segmented worms Arthropoda     V arious representatives Exercise: To properly identify morphological characteristics of each group, ecological niches that these species have exploited, and the Taxonomic groups that these species belong to of the Animalia or animal kingdom. Materials: Microscope, various slides

Biodiversity 2 BI 101

Plants (Eukarya) Exercise: Studying features/characteristics and ecology in lower and higher plants.       Compare the tissue, seeds, and where the plant would grow best.        Examine whole mount slides and living cultures of the plants. Lower plants:       Bryophyta      Pterophyta Higher plants:       Gymnosperms      Angiosperms Materials: Microscope, slides with ( Bryophyta, Pterophyta, Gymnosperms, and Angiosperms)

Biodiversity Lab BI 101

Today’s lab – Week 1 Excersize: study and analyze the representatives of the major groups of Organisms given under the microscope. Know the differences in ecology and characteristics.  Materials: Microscope, Bacteria slide, Protista slide, and Fungi slide    Domain Prokarya - Bacteria         Representative of Eubacteria (3 types)         Representatives of the Blue-green Algae Domain Eukarya - Protista         Various representatives  Domain Eukarya - Fungi         Representatives of the Basidiomycetes         Representatives of the Zygomycetes

Genetic Architecture Lab BI 101

Learn the relationship between genotype, chromosomes, and phenotype  Materials: lab manual, building pieces for Rebop Exercise: build a hypothetical organism (Rebop) with information emailed.       Find the genotype on the Chromosomes      Interpret the genetic information based on the alleles      Build the phenotype end up building different organisms (Rebops) based on the different dominant or recessives code.

BI 101 Transcription and Translation Lab

Part I – Transcription and Translation Overview - how genes work      Genes produce proteins that regulate chemical reactions inside the cell      2 step process           1)Transcription in the nucleus                make messenger mRNA from DNA templates using base-pairing rules           2)Translation in the cytoplasm – production of the protein                Make protein with mRNA and   transfer RNA Materials: Excel, computer Exercise: Simulation of Transcription and Translation in Excel

Mitosis Lab BI 101

Overview of Cell Division      Asexual cell division – mitosis      Cloning or copying of parent cell           Exact Duplication           Occurs throughout the body of multicellular animals, plants                Growth, Healing/Repair of tissues, and Regeneration Materials: Microscope, Onion, slide, and dye Exercise: Examine the whole mount slide of onion mitosis (Cell division) and identify all stages:  Interphase, Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, and Telophase
